The New ‘Snow Day’

In colder parts of the country, it’s not unusual for students to get a day off of school when heavy snow makes roads impassable and driving hazardous.

Increasingly, however, schools are being closed due to threats of violence made on social media.

On Nov. 13, Brea Olinda High School and BOUSD leadership canceled school due to a threat of gun violence posted to Instagram.

While BOHS, located in sunny Orange County, won’t ever experience a closure due to snow, it has — and will again, sadly — close due to the unceasing epidemic of school shootings.

Sofia Rodriguez, junior, is eager to jump into her second year at the Wildcat as the paper's Opinion Editor. She hopes to make an impact through articles and interactions--things necessary for her two aspiring careers as a writer and nurse.  When not poring over paragraphs with a coffee in hand, you'll find her screaming her favorite lyrics at local indie concerts or managing one of her many clubs. She shares her time with medicine in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) program, the National Honors Society of Sports Medicine (NHSSM), and the Athletic Training Internship. She is always writing, whether it be articles for the Wildcat or flash-fiction as the Inkwell Literary Magazine's Editor-in-Chief.  She spends the rest of her time climbing her own Plath-inspired fig tree to explore her passions in concert photography and poetry. But, if she ends up spending more time with her friends than with her Google Docs, she'll be happy regardless.

Claire Kim, senior, is excited to join the Wildcat staff as an illustrator for her last year in high school. She hopes to enhance the school paper and expand its influence through her artwork and creativity.  Claire is the president and founder of the International Food Club at BOHS.  Outside of the classroom, Claire participates in various activities, including art classes, taekwondo, dance, boy scouts, and community service activities. In her free time, she enjoys being with her friends and expressing herself through art, dance, singing, and vlogging. Once she graduates, Claire hopes to pursue a career in graphic design. For now, is focused on building her portfolio.
