It was a (Mario) party in the Wildcat gym as ASB hosted the annual winter rally on Jan. 10.
The Mario Kart-themed event featured colorful string lights, neon bracelets, glow sticks, a giant balloon arch, and members of student leadership — including emcees William Stelmar (’25), Danica Coburn (’25), and Brielle Denbo (’25) — dressed as the iconic video game duo, Mario and Luigi.
Launching the rally was a performance of the “National Anthem” by United Choir of Brea’s Masquerade singers, led by choir director Molly Gooch.
The traditional “Let’s Get Wild” chant followed, with the class of 2025 earning Clash of Classes points for out-yelling the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes.
Under a spotlight, team captains from wrestling, cheer, basketball, soccer, Mock Trial, water polo, and Model United Nations (MUN) introduced their respective programs to the student body.
The national championship-qualifying cheer team performed their high-flying 2025 competition routine to the delight and applause of the assembled students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
Class competitions resumed with a crowd favorite: mattress racing. Student participants threw themselves at inflatable mattresses to try and create enough momentum to slide their beds to the opposite side of the court. The junior class took first place, gaining more points for their class.
Dance Production, wearing red and black outfits with black and white checkered patterns, stepped into the spotlight with a race-themed performance.
In true Mario Kart fashion, campus supervisors Bob Till and Kyle Mahlstede raced golf carts around the basketball court, firing dodgeballs (instead of shells) at each other while navigating the “track.”
The rally’s mood turned somber as boys’ soccer paid tribute to late teammate Joseph Macedo (’25) who passed away last summer. Varsity soccer player Steven Donoso (’26) held aloft a t-shirt emblazoned with “In loving memory…” and a portrait of Macedo and asked the crowd to show their appreciation for Macedo with cheers and applause.
Competition commenced with a relay race. Students from each class had to perform three different games, starting with a two-man wheel barrel race, then a three-legged race, and ending with a scooter race. Mikayla Brent (‘25) secured the win for the senior class when her scooter crashed into a cluster of chairs at the final event’s finish line.
Winding down the rally, the 2025 senior Mr. Brea contestants – Addison Altermatt, Jake Brooks, Alex Fontanez, Britton Holst, Ocean Park, Jackson Samuels, Steven Smylie, and Miles Tyree — grabbed suitcases and performed a dance to promote their Love Island-themed Jan. 23 show. The dance included a backflip from Park and an impressive lift by Fontanez of the All-CIF football player Brooks.
