Joel Song, senior, is eager to face his last year of high school and join the Wildcat newspaper as a photographer and illustrator. Through his experience on the staff, he hopes to improve and tell stories through his photography and art.

Joel spends his free time outside crouched under bushes taking photos of wildlife, studying art, and trying new mediums, or taking care of his many pets. He is always looking for inspiration on what he should draw next, whether it be on Pinterest or in everyday life. 

Shocked by how fast high school has already gone by (just like everyone said it would) he hopes to enjoy this last year and pursue an art career in the future.

A red-tailed hawk perched atop a utility pole scanning for food behind BOHS's north wing. Red-tail hawks are carnivores, and the abundance of small bird species and wildlife around the BOHS campus contribute to the hawk’s diet.

An American Pipit traveling in a flock and searching for small insects to feast on. These birds breed in the Arctic in the summer, then migrate south to the United States in the winter.

A house sparrow pecking at an abandoned Uncrustables from a student lunch in the quad. Although not native, these are some of the most common birds that live throughout North America, preferring to live among manmade structures.

A northern mockingbird perched on a tree in the quad, defending its territory. These birds, as in the name, not only mimic the songs and calls of other birds, but other sounds as well, including creaking gates and car alarms to attract a mate.

A Cassin's Kingbird perched on a branch overlooking the lower parking lot. These loud and aggressive birds even attack hawks that get too close to their nests. After coming to the United States for the summer, these birds will migrate to Mexico to spend the winter.

A California Towhee digging and searching for food in the brush near the BOHS baseball courts. Although poison oak can be a nuisance to humans, the California Towhee builds nests in the branches and feeds off the fruits of this dangerous plant.

A Black Phoebe slamming a beetle larva against a stone bench before swallowing it whole. Black Phoebes can be found on the western coasts of North America, preferring to stay near bodies of water.

A female house finch perched on branches located in the garden bed in the quad. Females are gray in coloration to blend in with branches and foliage.

An immature myrtle warbler foraging through a small enclosed garden behind the school. The adult plumage will soon grow in and display vibrant shades of yellow and gray.

A male myrtle warbler perched on the Class of 1995 bench in the quad. The myrtle warbler is a subspecies of the yellow-rumped warbler. Female myrtle warblers have lighter coloring than males.

A Say's Phoebe perched on top of a megaphone. The Say’s Phoebe often returns to the same nesting site every year. These birds commonly use the school’s light fixtures as safe nesting areas.

An adult white-crowned sparrow perched on a garden bed in the quad. Juvenile white-crowned sparrows’ head patterns are brown and grey, but when they mature, they becomes black and white.

An American crow mid-landing on top of the Performing Arts Center. Crows are often seen around BOHS carrying materials such as left-behind wrappers. Crows are known for their foraging abilities, and have even been filmed making tools.
