School Resource Officer Steven Wulff awards senior Darren Espinosa the Brea Police Association Scholarship. 99 seniors were awarded scholarships and recognitions at Senior Awards Night on May 21.

$2.1 million in local, state, and national scholarships were awarded to the class of 2024 during Senior Awards Night on May 21.

The event celebrated 99 seniors who received 53 unique recognitions, from merit scholarships to leadership and department awards.

“It’s great for the community to have an investment in our seniors and to have a partnership with us and the school,” Robert Stelmar, counselor, and organizer of the ceremony, said.

A representative from each organization presented the respective awards to the seniors.

For the Mr. C. STEM Scholarship, David Crouch, a long-time volunteer at Mariposa Elementary School, presented two checks for $22,500 each to seniors Sydney Huang and Austin Yamamoto. The scholarship awards Mariposa Elementary alumni who hope to pursue careers in the STEM field.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Austin Yamamoto, senior, said. “I’m surrounded by some of the most hardworking and intelligent people, so receiving this scholarship really meant a lot to me.”

Each year, two students are recognized for demonstrating the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, care, and citizenship. 10 nominees were selected by peers and teachers as Character Counts finalists.

Joceyln Islas, senior, and one of two winners of the Character Counts Award, was unaware that her nomination was the result of her peers’ votes. “The fact that [they] thought of me was such a great honor,” she said. “I feel really valued for putting in the work and trying to be an all-around good person at this school.”
